On July 12, the Orthodox Church celebrates the Day of the Glorious and Supreme Apostles Peter and Paul. On this day, Peter Lent ends.

The Apostles Peter and Paul are especially revered as disciples of Jesus Christ, who, after the death and resurrection of Christ, began to preach and spread the teachings of the Gospel throughout the world.

A reminder of unity and diversity in the life of the Church has become the feast of the holy foremost apostles Peter and Paul. According to Orthodox teachings, the authority in the Evangelical Community belonged to the Council of the Apostles, among whom Peter and Paul are considered the main ones - "the supreme", in contrast to the Catholic Church, where Peter is considered the sole "head of the apostles". The memory of the two apostles is celebrated at the same time, and this is an obvious symbol of unity. But Peter and Paul are so different that their common holiday becomes a reminder of diversity.

Despite the fact that the Church calls these apostles the Supreme, they did not rule over the other apostles, considered themselves equal in everything and made all decisions together at the apostolic meetings. These apostles are called supreme according to the primacy of order and labor.

The apostles Peter and Paul received their martyrdom on this day. The Apostle Peter was crucified on the cross with his head down, the Apostle Paul, as a Roman citizen, could not be subjected to the shameful execution on the cross, and his head was cut off. Historians' testimonies differ: it is believed that the apostles died on the same day, but in different places. Other historians say that the apostle Paul was executed a year later than the apostle Peter, but on the same day. ⠀
The Apostle Peter was distinguished by his sincerity, simplicity and ardent love for Christ, he was the first to recognize Jesus Christ as the Son of God, was a witness of the Transfiguration of Christ on Tabor.

The Apostle Paul was called to ministry in the manifestation of Christ to him, he worked harder in preaching than others, and more than others left his written teachings. ⠀
Peter and Paul are apostles of repentance. Peter denied Christ three times during the condemnation of Him by the Jewish high priests, and wept bitterly, realizing and repenting. Paul was a persecutor of Christians, but Christ Himself appeared to him in a vision and admonished him, after which the Apostle Paul repented of his error all his life.

The example of these apostles tells us that God values not so much our correctness and perfection as our sincerity, purity of heart and love. Everyone can make a mistake or stumble, but sincerity of repentance and a firm intention to follow Christ covers up previous mistakes, and there is no such sin that the Lord would not forgive.

Paul was not one of the twelve closest disciples of Christ and did not meet with Christ in His life. But the example of the exaltation of the Apostle Paul testifies to us that the one who is close to him not in position, but in Spirit is significant for the Lord. ⠀
