For the first time the white - blue - red flag was raised during the reign of Alexei Mikhailovich on the first Russian warship "Eagle", built in 1667-1669 at the Dedin shipyard.
Peter the First is recognized as the legal founder of the Tricolor. On January 31, 1705, he issued a decree in which all merchant ships were obliged to raise the white - blue - red flag. Peter himself drew a sample and determined the order of the stripes.
But the status of the state flag acquired only in 1896. On the eve of the coronation of Nicholas II, it was announced that the national should be approved white - blue - red, and no other.
In 1918, the Soviet government abolished the Tricolor and replaced it with a red flag.
