Today in Russia is the Day of the State Tricolor - the Russian flag!
This is a state symbol, along with the emblem and anthem of Russia.
The flag is based on three horizontal equal stripes of white, blue and red. There is still no consensus as to why these colors were chosen. But it is believed that each color, initially, had its own meaning.
According to one version, white means freedom, blue - the Mother of God, patronizing Russia, and red - statehood.
Another version says that white symbolizes nobility and purity, blue - honesty and loyalty, and red - courage, courage and blood shed for the Fatherland.
