Today is the Day of Remembrance of Venerable Maximus the Greek.
The memory is celebrated on January 21 (February 3) and June 21 (July 4).
Ethnic Greek, he was born in 1470, in the village of Arta, on the island of Corfu.
Went to Italy. For the study of languages and philosophy. He was tonsured.
In 1515, the Grand Duke Vasily the Third, asked to send him a monk to translate spiritual books. So Maxim ended up in Russia.
Observing the social injustice of life, which contradicted his Christian ideals, he criticized the authorities, thereby gaining enemies.
Maxim the Greek was accused of heresy and imprisoned in the Joseph-Volotsk monastery. The conditions there were very harsh. Only in his advanced years was he transferred to retirement in the Trinity - Sergius Monastery.
Canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church in the face of the Venerables.
